What Does Your Job Say About You?

What does your job say about you?

What does your job say about you?

They say that actions speak louder than words, and with most of us working late nights and weekends, it seems that the majority of our waking life is spent in work-related activities.

So what does your job say about you?

Are you an introverted computer nerd or a gum-chewing, hair-twirling valley girl working at the Gap? Can you subvert the truth to meet your needs like a lawyer or are you a compassionate saint of a medical professional? Are you the devil in Prada, running a fashion magazine or a sweater-wearing, loafer-loving interior decorator? When you add up the actions of your working day, what do they say about you? Here are a few common jobs and what they tell the world about the people who choose them for a career.

  • Police Officer – If you have chosen to serve and protect, you are probably the type that pushes yourself relentlessly (possibly as a result of all the sugar and caffeine you’re ingesting…put down the doughnuts!). You have a strong sense of self and can be very opinionated. You also appreciate the value of solid facts (as opposed to abstract thinking). If people were divided into two groups, those who like Benny Hill and those who like Monte Python, you would be the former (the fish-slapping dance is like a foreign language to you).
  • Store Clerk/Gas Station Attendant – You disdain the idea of work and have decided to show it by taking a job where you earn so little that your boss will never be able to fire you, no matter how rude you are to customers. You harbor dreams of grandeur, but lack the motivation or planning skills to achieve them. You are smart enough to make something of your life, but you’d rather expound upon your terrible luck at every opportunity. You enjoy reading magazines and texting your friends, especially when someone is staring at you, waiting for service. You probably have a following of young minions who enjoy role-playing games and think you are cool because you have a car (although they haven’t yet realized that your mom’s old Camry is not, in fact, a cool car).
  • Mechanic – Your mind is well-suited to technical pursuits while your body is both strong and agile. You might be the perfect man if you weren’t so thick when it came to dealing with people. You have extremely limited tolerance for idiots and a penchant for total silence. Women find you interesting until you start talking about alternators, catalytic converters, and on-board diagnostics (which you do with gusto). Your closest friend is your German shepherd, Duke, and the best day of your life was when you saw The Boss in concert.

  • Graphic Artist – You could be a real artist…if only you didn’t need money. You secretly envy those who eschew furniture, food, and personal hygiene in order to live the dream, but not enough to give up your day job. You feel that your creativity is slowly being sucked away by clients who request work that is “edgy”, “visceral”, and “fresh”. What they really want is for you to re-do your work five times before they settle on the first idea, which was really the best anyway. You fill the hole in your heart with technical gadgets and expensive wine while your canvas and paints gather dust in the farthest corner of your closet.
  • Writer – Clearly, you are the smartest person on the planet! You have chosen a career that highlights both your creativity and your intellect…plus, you get to work from home. You are well within your rights to laugh at all the poor schlubs who must rise with the alarm clock and spend two hours fighting gridlock only to waste their day in a cubicle. You, on the other hand, take your laptop down to the pool at the crack of noon and while away the afternoon writing blog posts to pay the bills. Give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done!
