Most have heard the old saying about finding a job; “it’s not what you know, but who you know”. Connecting with the right people at the right time increases your chances of finding a job. The most indispensable tool for the job seeker today is a social networking website.

This is where a high value, professional network can be created. The most effective networking site for the job seeker is Linkedin. Linkedin provides a complete range of online services such as contact management, profile and resume viewing, email and job search tools. Sharing network connections with others in your network and gaining access to new contacts is a powerful benefit of the system.

Linkedin can provide a full view into an organization’s job openings along with hiring logistics such as where and how to apply.

Hiring managers are using Linkedin and other social networking sites to find and recruit the best possible candidates for job positions. According to MBA Online, devising a comfortable company culture is an important aspect of any business. Since Linkedin incorporates social networking in its workings, hiring departments are able to discern your personality and see whether you’re a good fit for the company.
One of the things hiring managers may look for is who potential job applicants are connecting to and how many connections they may have.

The hiring manager and the job prospect may share the same contacts in their network, so it is easy for them to obtain a reference or other information that could be helpful in the recruiting. For this reason, it is essential for the user of Linkedin to keep profiles current and to provide background information that a hiring manager would find appealing. Creating a profile and updates is an easy process and can be accomplished via computer or smart phone.

Contact information can be easily uploaded from e-mail contact files such as Outlook. Linkedin also provides a smartphone application so that access and updates to the system are always available. Linkedin can provide various prompts to the user to make sure that profile and contact information stays current.

Linkedin is a rapidly growing application with over 100 million subscribers. According to Technology Review, Linkedin has a high revenue upside because the company’s ability to sell advanced services to head hunting services. What makes Linkedin different from other social network sites is that it combines the power of social networking with business.

Linkedin has also become a vast mine of useful and valuable data, not only to the job seeker but also the marketer.

This is a time when economies are shrinking, and job opportunities are scarce. Job seekers require a smarter, effective set of tools to help secure a job. Build your own high value network with Linkedin and watch your career and job opportunities soar.
