Video Resume – May Work Wonders, But Not for Everybody

In our fast moving word, in times when unemployment rates are pretty high, a simple resume and cover letter are often not enough to get a job. One of the techniques that have been gaining in popularity recently is a video resume. You can find plenty of them on YouTube, there are also many specialist sites that feature such videos and can guide you through the process of making one, like VideoResume.com or ResumeTube.com. However, not every video will guarantee success and, unfortunately, there is no recipe that works for everybody.

Look to leave a positive impression.

Look to leave a positive impression.

“Greetings from my bathroom”
One of the most positive examples of successful video presentation is the clip prepared by Eric Romer. He heard about a social media marketing manager vacancy at HeadBlade (a company selling head shaving razors) via Twitter and decided to act in an unusual way. Within 24 hours he set up @HireMeHeadblade Twitter account and a blog where he included a video of himself shaving his head and talking about his interest in the brand. It was the clip that persuaded the company’s CEO to contact Romer. He was invited for interview and got the job!

Make sure there are no videos like this of you on the web.

Make sure there are videos like this of you on the web.

Complete failure
3 years earlier a Yale University student, Aleksey Vayner, created a video resume to apply for a job at a financial company. It was a classic example of a good turned complete failure. The clip spread very quickly on the Internet and got wide media coverage. Unfortunately for Vayner, the response was very unfavorable and he has to bear the negative consequences till today. Aleksey was so boastful in his video that it looked rather funny and his numerous achievements aroused suspicion. It quickly turned out, that most of what he claimed to accomplish was not true. I guess it goes without saying that he didn’t get the job…

Key to success
Although a video resume can help you to find a perfect job, it may also happen to be wasted effort, or worse, the video may turn out to be detrimental to your career. First of all, you have to remember that video resumes cannot replace the written version (at least in most cases). The clip should be an attractive addition – not a mere presentation of your educational background and work experience. Use it to emphasize your strong points, to show how you may differ from other candidates or to explain why you are a perfect candidate for a certain post. That is what Eric Romer did – he presented himself informally, showed that he is a strong supporter of the brand and proved that he can skillfully use social media, an indispensable feature, when you apply for a position of interactive/social media marketing manager. And that is why he succeeded so quickly – because his video was well thought-out and successfully communicated to his prospective employer. One last piece of advice – don’t pretend to be a rockstar, be yourself!

Colbert’s Alpha [Job Seeking and Cheating] Dog

Thursday, February 11th, 2010
DiggThis <

This Alpha Dog – is an Alpha Job Seeking LIAR: Unprepared references can discredit your work

The first and key reference talked glowingly about her work but then undercut her by challenging his work on a key project.

“My own CIO at my company actually disputed two facts on my resume! When one of the reference checkers called, they found out that I had given him an old version of a resume,” said Alex. “He really did not know that I handled the fix of a very large financial institution in the way I did.”

So he said that I had not participated in the IS Manhattan Based Project as it was called. He suggested that – and it ended up looking like:

“I lied on my resume without saying explicitly that I lied. To my own discredit, I never gave him a copy of my new resume, and because I was in such a rush to bail out of the company, I just did not communicate what I actually did in the last part of my tenure.”

Lessons:

  • Do not assume anything.
  • Closely coach and counsel your references to ensure you both agree on what will be said if someone calls.
  • Get agreement on key achievements and resume points.
  • Make sure you take time to copy the reference on your latest resume.

Some not so great examples of ways to resign

Friday, January 29th, 2010

DiggThis Share

boss

You may hate your job. You may want to quit. You may want to look to do it with some class… as these upcoming examples show, the impression can last a long time.

1. Bikini Girl Inspired Me to Quit

Kevin Nalty, who used to be the consumer product director for Propecia at Merck Pharmaceuticals, used American Idol and his bare chest to leave his job in order to pursue an online video career. While Big Pharmaceutical to YouTube might sound like the worst career move ever, after viewing his resignation video, we have to think the US Health care system got the best of that transaction:

Last night Katrina Darrell sang Mariah Carey’s “Treated Me Kind” on American Idol 2009. Her song inspired me to quit the full-time job as a Product Director at Merck. Thanks to my Merck friends and co-workers for tolerating me! :)

I was the consumer marketing director on Propecia for hairloss. Shut up, okay? You should see my brother’s hairline.

Gotta do what you love, and trust the money to follow. Should have listened to that advice right out of school. Not too late for some of you.

Full steam ahead in video “entertaining,” and helping brands engage in social media and video… via Hitviews and via my own consulting firm to be announced next week!

Seriously- thanks so much for watching and subscribing, since I couldn’t afford to do this without some income from the ads you watch.

2. Star Wars Naked Guy

Sometimes the best way to say “I’m leaving” is by waving around a naked penis. Or by filming a video using the Star Wars crawl to describe how you would have sex with everyone in the office, and then waving around your naked penis obscured by a clown face. OK, that’s never the best way to say anything, but don’t tell that to this guy:

As he puts it “Thank you Emakinian”:

3. Manager with a [bad] song:

If you’re going to quit, you might as well do it in front of a bunch of people so somebody can describe you in detail to the police. The below Moe’s manager decided to dance to “Ice Ice Baby,” a song that somehow expressed his desire to pursue better employment with lyrics like, “the girls were hot wearing less than bikinis,” and “wax a chump like a candle.”

4. Intentionally Poor Performance Review: The writing may be on the wall… and in some cases, the writing may be literal,dodd-quit-now

but failing a performance review is another bad way on which to leave a job:

chat-1

5. Bombing the computer network:  There is a fine line between brilliance and stupidity, way number five will definitely leave you without a future reference.google-local-suggest

Teacher’s aide asked to resign over nude photo. Cautionary tale about sexting and work. [Video]

Teacher’s aide asked to resign over nude photo

BANGOR, Pa. (AP) – January 7, 2010 — An eastern Pennsylvania teacher’s aide has been asked to resign after a nude photo of her circulated among students.

The high-school aide apparently left her phone unattended at a non-school event, when someone found it and started distributing the photo.

Bangor Area Superintendent John Reinhart says he will seek to terminate the six-year employee if she doesn’t resign. He says her ability to work with district youngsters has been compromised. She has not been at work for several days.

The woman’s name is not being released and Reinhart doesn’t know if she has a lawyer.

The district is asking parents to check students’ phones for the image.

Reinhart calls it a teachable moment for students on the risks that come with instant communication.
